Chapter Eighteen

Banned

No one speaks. No one moves. Tension comes from everyone now, except Clap, who is staring at me, not moving a single muscle. He breaks up each word, as if I don’t know what he’s saying and he has to slow down for me. “Do. You. Understand?” His voice has a tight, authorizing edge to it.

I blink, surprised. “Um. No. Not really. What’s the problem with Freedom’s…?”

“It’s too dangerous,” Clap interrupts. “For you, and for Tuck and Sea-Anna and even you, Prince.” He points his spoon at Daedrian. “Over the past seventeen years, Speaks Wise Words has become very prejudice against Freedom’s Calling. A lot of the meetings have ended up with witches dying.”

Suddenly, I’m furious. “So what you’re saying is, it’s okay when it’s only were-creatures dying. But when our kind start dying…” I make a sour face. “Bet that’s hard to cope with, huh?”

Clap is angry with me now. His jaw flexes, his eyebrows knit together, pulling down over his brown eyes. “I care very much for the were-creatures, Sunlight. If there were any way to free them, I would.”

“Freedom’s Calling is a way,” I argue, gripping my spoon tightly.

“A way to certain death!” he yells, slamming his fist down on the table, making everyone jump. “Some meetings get lucky because they are underground, out of the eyes of the Law.”

“Then I’ll attend those.”

“No,” he grits his teeth at me. “I won’t allow you to kill yourself.”

I bite down hard on my tongue, trying not to say what I’m thinking. The sudden pain on my tongue makes me flinch and I taste blood. The moment I release my tongue, my mouth starts going without me, but luckily it doesn’t say what it wanted to a few seconds ago. “I was always taught on earth that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”

“You’re not on earth anymore, Sun…”

It’s my turn to interrupt. “I’m not about to stand around and watch this situation continue if I can change it.”

Clap throws his hands up. “Fine! Go get yourself killed, Ella.” He stresses my human name as if it’s supposed to offend me. He suddenly sighs and rubs his eyes with his fingers. “Please, Sunny. Be reasonable for once in your life.”

As if he’s hard of hearing, I break up my sentence. “I’m. Not. About. To stand. Around. And watch. This situation. Continue.”

He huffs and looks at Songs. “Now you choose not to say anything?”

“This is our conversation,” I tell him, a little irritated that he’s looking for backup. Then I remember I wanted Daedrian to back me up when it came to Sea-Anna, but that was different. There wasn’t an argument going on. At least not one heated, like this one. Sea-Anna might not agree that she’s pretty in that green dress and emerald pins, but that’s different. Very different.

Clap barely glances at me and then looks to Daedrian. “What about you? You goin’ to these meetings now?”

Daedrian shrugs. He sits up straight and looks Clap right in his eyes, obviously not afraid of him.
